field trip, Cinco de mayo and review

Hola padres! Sorry for the late post, but I was out and about yesterday with the first grade on their field trip to the Challenger Space Center! We had a great time and it was so fun to be with them outside of the classroom. We had such fun with the different activities that the center had planned for us. The fizzy bottle rocket was actually my favorite.

At the beginning of this week, I was able to talk to the scholars about an important celebration in Mexico's history: Cinco de mayo! So many people believe it to be the celebration of Mexico's independence from Spain, but it actually doesn't have anything to do with that. If you get a chance, ask your scholar what cinco de mayo is all about and why it is celebrated. It is a great story as it actually has so much to do with the virtues that Great Hearts stands for. I am so glad to be able to integrate all of these elements into one lesson.

We also are doing some review in Spanish this week using the workbooks. The scholars really had to delve into their memory for some of the words and they did a great job as usual. Next week, I will move to the last lesson in the workbook which reviews the Spanish alphabet. I'm not sure why this lesson is last as I feel it should be one of the first lessons, but nonetheless, we will get into this lesson to reinforce the rules of the Spanish alphabet that I have already taught them. Next year, I plan on this being one of the first lessons we get into.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sra. Hamilton
